Children's stories and fables such as "The Tortoise and the Hare" are full of inspirational characters and symbols. Many popular television and film characters have been based on the most enduring characters from legends, folklore, and children's storybooks. Characters such as Bigfoot, Pecos Bill, the Abominable Snowman/Yeti, Thor, Brer Rabbit, Zorro and even "monsters" such as the Wolfman, Frankenstein's Monster and the Mummy have all been adapted directly for new works and uses and have influenced countless new TV, movie, and theme park costumed characters. 

Some of the best-loved characters of all time can be used to promote reading programs, and many also make great corporate mascots. Pecos Bill, for example, would make a simple but immediately effective mascot for a steakhouse; Paul Bunyan makes a great mascot for a number of businesses that can benefit from the association with the Pacific Northwest.

They can make great school and sports mascots. Zorro might inspire a "Masked Rider" mascot; Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone might inspire "Fighting Pioneer" mascots.
